WORLD FUTSAL | FEATURE | November 8, 2026 Some of futsal's most interesting Canadian connections are hiding in plain sight. One of the world's most accomplished national-team coaches was born in Edmonton. Jorge Braz, the long-serving head coach of Portugal's men's futsal national team, was born in the Alberta capital. Futsal Canada has previously reported that his family returned to Portugal when he was nine years old. That makes his later career a remarkable piece of Edmonton's sporting story, even though the achievements came after his family had moved abroad. BRAZ BUILT A PORTUGUESE POWERHOUSE Braz became Portugal's head coach in 2010 after working in the national-team setup. Under his leadership, Portugal won UEFA Futsal EURO in 2018 and 2022 and the FIFA Futsal World Cup in 2021. Those trophies helped establish Portugal among the game's leading nations and made Braz one of the most respected coaches in international futsal. His story is not just about silverware. Across international campaigns, Portugal developed a reputation for tactical organization, confidence under pressure and the ability to compete with Brazil, Spain and Argentina on the largest stages. THE CANADIAN CONNECTION The Edmonton birthplace is documented by Futsal Canada and Portugal's coaching community. It does not mean Braz built his coaching career in Alberta, and it should not be presented that way. But it is still a meaningful connection for a city working to grow high-level futsal. For young Edmonton players and coaches, Braz's path illustrates the international scope of the sport. Futsal is not confined to a local league or a single country: it has an established professional and national-team culture with its own coaches, players, supporters and championships. WHAT COMES NEXT Portugal continues to compete at the highest level. Braz was on the bench for the country's 2026 Futsal EURO final against Spain and the November 2026 Futsal Finalissima. As Futsal Edmonton expands its international coverage, his story will be an important recurring connection between this city and the wider game.
