Understanding the Rules of The Rangers Tournament

The Rangers Tournament is not built like a regular soccer tournament.

This is 7v7 soccer with speed, pressure, creativity, and a format designed to keep every match alive until the final moment. Taking place August 28–30 at Millennium Place, The Rangers Tournament will bring teams together for a competitive weekend with a $15K cash prize on the line.

But before teams step onto the field, they need to understand what makes this tournament different.

7v7 Soccer, Built for Action

Every match is played 7v7, including the goalkeeper.

Teams must have a minimum of five players to start a match, and substitutions are unlimited. That means teams can keep the pace high, rotate players often, and use their bench strategically throughout the game.

Substitutions must happen properly through the substitution zone. Illegal substitutions can result in disciplinary action, including yellow cards, red cards, or even a penalty shot if the substitution affects a promising attack or goal-scoring opportunity.

The message is simple: fast play is encouraged, but discipline matters.

Team Kits and Player Equipment

Teams are responsible for supplying their own home and away kits.

Players must wear matching jerseys with different numbers, and goalkeepers must wear a contrasting numbered jersey. If there is a colour conflict, the away team must change.

Stockings are required, and shin guards are recommended.

For a tournament with a cash prize and serious competition, teams should arrive looking organized and ready.

No Offside, More Attacking Soccer

There is no offside in The Rangers Tournament.

That one rule changes the game.

It creates more attacking space, more transition moments, and more responsibility for defenders and goalkeepers. Teams will need to stay alert, communicate well, and manage space intelligently.

This format rewards teams that can think quickly and punish mistakes.

Kick-Ins, Goal Kicks, and Restarts

When the ball goes out over the touchline, play restarts with a kick-in.

Opponents must give five metres of space, and a goal cannot be scored directly from a kick-in.

Goal kicks also cannot be scored directly. Goalkeepers have eight seconds with the ball in their hands. If the goalkeeper goes over the limit, the opposing team is awarded a corner kick.

Corner kicks and free kicks also come with five-metre distance requirements. All free kicks are indirect.

These rules are designed to keep the game moving and reduce unnecessary delays.

No Slide Tackling

Slide tackling is not permitted.

Players may slide to keep the ball in play or block a shot only when no opponent is within playing distance. Any slide tackle inside the penalty area results in a penalty shot.

This rule protects players while still allowing effort, blocks, and defensive commitment.

Teams should coach their players clearly on this before the tournament begins. A careless slide can change the game.

Goalden Goal Time: The Tournament’s Signature Rule

The biggest twist in The Rangers Tournament is Goalden Goal Time.

Each match begins with 20 minutes of regulation time. After that, the game enters Goalden Goal Time.

The target becomes one goal more than the current leading or tied score. The match begins Goalden Goal Time at 5v5. Every two minutes, one player is removed from each team until the game reaches 2v2 or a winning goal is scored.

That creates a completely different type of pressure.

The field opens up. Players get more space. Mistakes become more expensive. Fitness, composure, and decision-making become even more important.

In Goalden Goal Time, once the ball enters the opponent’s half, it cannot be played back into your own half unless it is deflected. If a team breaks that rule, the other team receives a free kick from the halfway mark touchline.

This is where games can turn quickly.

The teams that stay calm will have the advantage.

Roster Rules

Teams may register a maximum of 15 players and staff combined.

All players and staff must complete online registration before the tournament. Government-issued ID is required to receive credentials, and players must present ID if requested.

The roster deadline is August 20, 2026.

Players may register for only one team. Any team using an ineligible player can be removed from the tournament and may receive a 3–0 forfeit.

This is a serious tournament, and roster rules will matter.

Tournament Format

Each team is guaranteed a minimum of three round-robin games.

The tournament will then move into knockout rounds. The format may be adjusted depending on the final number of registered teams, but knockout rounds may include:

  • Round of 16
  • Quarterfinals
  • Semifinals
  • Final

Teams that advance to the final are expected to play the final.

This is important: once a team enters, it is expected to compete fully.

Standings and Tiebreakers

If teams are tied in the standings, the tournament uses the following tiebreakers:

  1. Most wins
  2. Head-to-head
  3. Goal differential
  4. Goals for
  5. Goals against
  6. Coin toss

Every goal can matter. Every game can matter. Teams should play with that in mind from the first whistle.

Discipline and Conduct

The Rangers Tournament is competitive, but teams are expected to compete with control.

Foul language, spitting, fighting, intimidation, abuse, and misconduct may result in disciplinary action or removal from the tournament.

Red cards carry consequences. If a player receives a red card, the player must leave immediately and the team plays short for the rest of the match. If a coach receives a red card, the coach is removed from the game area, but the team does not play short.

Violent conduct can result in suspension for the entire tournament.

Teams are also responsible for the behaviour of their spectators.

Protests

Protests must be submitted in writing within 15 minutes of the match.

Only teams involved in the match may protest, and referee decisions cannot be protested.

The tournament committee will decide whether a protest has merit before reviewing it.

Committee decisions are final.

Why These Rules Matter

The Rangers Tournament is designed to be fast, competitive, and intense.

The rules reward teams that are organized, disciplined, fit, and brave enough to play under pressure. The 7v7 format creates space. The no-offside rule encourages attacking. Unlimited substitutions keep the game fast. Goalden Goal Time creates drama that can flip a match in seconds.

This is not a tournament where teams can coast.

If you want to win, you need quality. You need depth. You need discipline. And when Goalden Goal Time arrives, you need players who want the ball.

Registration Is Open

The Rangers Tournament takes place August 28–30 at Millennium Place.

Team registration is $1,500.

The roster deadline is August 20, 2026.

The prize is $15K.

The format is different.

The pressure will be real.

Now the question is simple:

Is your team ready?
